EQUIPMENT REQUIREMENTS FOR TRAINING AND COMPETITION

Fencing clothing and a fencing mask are there to protect the fencing from damage. There are special safety rules for the different age groups. The rules describe what equipment the different age categories must have and what level of safety applies.

The measure used is Newton, ie a unit of measure that describes how resistant the equipment is to external force. The rule of thumb is that at very early ages, equipment marked with 350N (or no marking at all) is sufficient, but already at about 13 years of age, the requirements for safety equipment begin to tighten. Read more about this below under Equipment regulations.

In addition to these rules, the International Federation (FIE) also assesses the quality of the equipment. If the equipment meets FIE’s quality standards, it may be marked with FIE. This marking is a requirement for most competitions.

In addition to a working weapon, a fencer must have his own equipment. At FFF, we lend the equipment the first semester. Then it’s time to start buying your own. Feel free to start with trousers as these are not included in the club’s loan clothes. Then it is appropriate with a mask and glove. Before the first competition outside the club, the equipment must be complete, including two weapons and two body cords.

Fencing worm

Masks are available in various Newton numbers from 800N to 1600N. For senior, veteran, junior, cadet and youth class U15, the mask must have an FIE mark with 1600N. The mask will also have the new double cadre band for competition. For younger adolescents, there are no guidelines for Newtontal and the mask does not need to be FIE-marked, but should have an extra safety band on the back. This applies to competitions. There are no requirements for training. However, one should be aware of the risks and make sure that the mask is snug.

Plastrong

All age groups must wear plastrong in connection with competition. These rules should also be applied to all training, which is why FFF strongly recommends the purchase of plastrong in connection with the acquisition of a fencing jacket.

For senior, veteran, junior and cadet classes, the plastic round FIE marking with 800N applies. For young people, ie U13, either the plastic ring or the jacket is FIE-marked with 800N. This applies to competitions. FFF recommends that you buy an 800N plastrong as it can be bought in a slightly larger size and can when you go up in classes.

Fencing jacket

Also called vest. For those who only train, only a simpler jacket of 350N is needed. For senior, veteran, junior and cadet classes, FIE marking with 800N applies to competition. For young people U13 and U15, either the plastic ring or the jacket is FIE-marked with 800N. This applies to competitions.

Fencing pants

When training in the fencing hall, a normal training overalls pants may be enough, but our recommendation is real fencing pants. For senior, veteran, junior and cadet classes, FIE marking with 800N applies to competition. For U15, the competition does not have to be FIE-marked during competition.

 Breast protection

It is also important for younger girls to protect themselves as it sometimes happens that hard blows are dealt. Breast protection is mandatory for girls from U15. There are also straighter variants for boys.

THE FENCING SHOP

FFF arranges equipment day at the club every semester when a fencing equipment supplier comes with his shop. It is then also possible to buy and sell used equipment. There are some companies in Sweden that sell fencing equipment. FFF collaborates with Touche and Peter Barvestad, http://touche.jetshopmini.se/ , in Stockholm there is also Salek Altauz http://salek_hp.ownit.nu/prislista.htm and Engarde http://en-garde.info/ . You can also buy directly from the major manufacturers e.g. Allstar: www.Allstar.de (email for export, eg sabine.maier@allstar.de web shop does not work for Sweden), PBT: www.shop.pbtfencing.com.
